THE GREATEST PRAYER
Maybe the greatest prayer
That any one of us could say
Is give me the eyes to see
To see injustice
To see faults in the system
The cracked places in each of us
The eyes to see and acknowledge
Death
Suffering
Inequality
And in the seeing
To know
That justice isn’t blind
That all systems are meant to crumble eventually
That as Cohen once said
The cracks are how the light gets through
3:00 PM
To see and affirm
That death is not the ending
That suffering well makes us compassionate
And that even you don’t grasp for equality
You give it away like a gift
So give me eyes to see
And in the seeing
To know
And from the knowing
Let me act
And as I act
Let me never forget
To take the time to stop
And to see again
