Predawn: The Morning Song of Birds

Predawn

The Morning Song of Birds

Oh Ancient One from before days had dawned,

Do you hover still over chaotic waters

And the mutated form of a wild world?

Are you here in this time between times,

This space between spaces?

Do you walk with us in these fleeting shadows

Of the yet delivered day?

As we rise early

Before even the sun has woken from it’s rest

Will you let us feel the presence of your

Animating spirit?

In this moment of inhale

Before the exhalation of beginning

The night before has passed into yesterday

But today has not yet been born

Are you with us

As the midwife holds the hand

Of a weary mother

Do you labor with us

To bear us anew into the coming day?

Allow us, oh Creating Spirit

To pause long enough to breathe

To wait until we feel you beside us

Before walking into whatever the dawn brings us

In this time before time

Give me the grace I will need

To give bread to my neighbor

And admit that even I,

have needs to be filled

Forgive my hesitance to greet the sun

But I will not move yet from the shadows

Of the fast fleeing night

Unless Your presence firsts leads into the light

Of this beckoning dawn.
